Important Dates

All Participant Meetings, Deadlines, and Events:

Wednesday, January 9:  Registration deadline and $350 non-refundable deposit to cover the cost of your airfare.

Tuesday, February 5 | 6:00-8:00pm: First all participant meeting in the ROCK, dinner provided.

Saturday, March 2: Student Ministry Auction (4 hours of volunteer service required). See below for more information.

Sunday, March 17:  Training: meet your building team and learn basic housebuilding skills. 2:00pm-5:00pm, in the ROCK. Second payment of $400 due.

Sunday, March 31:  Commissioning at the 5pm service (families and friends encouraged to join).  Meeting 6:00pm-7:30pm in the ROCK, dinner provided.   ***Collection of Passports***

Monday, April 1: Baggage night: drop off your hammer, tool belt, sleeping bag/pad/pillow, 4:30pm-5:30pm in the ROCK.

Saturday, April 6: Meet at SeaTac airport at 6:00am: Southwest #3305- Depart Seattle 8:50am, arrive San Diego 11:40am

Saturday, April 13: Pick-up at SeaTac airport baggage claim at 4:00pm: Southwest #2407- Depart San Diego 12:40pm, Arrive Seattle 3:40pm

Sunday, April 28: Mexico Sharing @ MIPC 5:00pm Worship Service (families and friends encouraged to join). Reunion from 6:00-8:00pm in the ROCK, dinner provided.

Tuesday, March 12:  Both adult & MX student leaders meet for an equipping session, 6:00pm-8:00pm in the ROCK, dinner provided.    

Student Ministry Auction

This is a great community event held annually to raise funds for the ROCK Student Ministries and Mission Projects. All participants (adult leaders and students) are required to volunteer 4 hours at the Student Ministry Auction on Saturday evening, March 2. The money raised at this event helps subsidize two things:  1. Some of the cost of 20+ adult leaders needed to safely execute this trip and 2. The cost of Mexico house parts.  If your student has a significant conflict on March 2, please contact Julie Garrett immediately, julieg@mipc.org .

Cost

We ask for $750 contribution towards the cost of the trip from all adults who are financially able. The estimated actual cost is $1700.00 per person. This estimate includes the roughly $5,200 materials cost for each home, airfare, rental vehicles and food while in Mexico. The gap between contributions and the actual cost is funded by a combination of individual supplementary contributions, Student Ministry Auction proceeds, and employer match programs.

Trip cost* is broken into two payment installations:

First payment- $350 non-refundable deposit due with registration (by January 9 to cover cost of plane ticket)

Second payment- Amount varies depending on what you are able to contribute, Due by March 17

Scholarships: Partial scholarships are available to all participants on a completely confidential basis. Please indicate interest below.

Late Applications:

Applications turned in after the January 9 deadline are subject to a $100 fee.

Inquires Regarding Safety:

With the events in Tijuana being front and center in our daily news, we are getting some questions from folks about how this might affect our house building trip planned for April. Especially from folks who are considering this trip for themselves or a loved one.

Shorter answer: Safety is our top priority, and we will be monitoring the situation closely, and at this point, we are still planning to go.

Longer answer: I have spoken with University Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Spokane who both take very large groups the same time as us, and they are also planning on moving forward with their trips. Brad, the director from First Presbyterian Church of Spokane, let me know that he personally has 3 friends who live in San Diego (all parts of churches down there) that have been going back and forth daily to help support the churches in TJ that are housing many of the migrants. They say that outside of the one border crossing incident the other day (which was obviously significant)- everyone down there (from the migrants, to those patrolling, to those serving) has been super peaceful. My friend Adam, he said, was walking around down there for most of the day today just checking in, bringing supplies, and meeting with his pastor friends, and he said everything was as regular as normal.

I also spoke with the executive director of Doxa, the non-profit organization we work with for our house building trip, and here is what he said:

As for Doxa, we’re keeping in constant contact with our staff and orphanage partners on the ground. They have a great pulse on the current conditions and how things are developing throughout Tijuana. I also continue to be in Tijuana 1-2 times per week and my driving route is right next to two of the largest encampments of migrants. If conditions will not be safe for any group coming to Tijuana, we’ll communicate that as soon as possible and cancel the trip.

NOW, that doesn't mean that things can’t change! But at this point, here is how and why we're moving forward:

  1. First, we are holding Tijuana in prayer, and we are especially praying for the migrant travelers and their families, the people of TJ, and our own country's response to this ordeal.

  2. The areas where we work and live are not near the border and have not been affected, by this development.

  3. We are keeping in regular communication with Doxa, and our contacts down in Tijuana, and will plan to do an on-the-ground visit before April to check things out for ourselves.

As always, if at any point between now and our trip in April, things change and it no longer feels like an acceptable risk- we will for sure cancel the trip.

Now I know this doesn’t answer your other question: Should I let my child sign up for this trip?

We believe that every family has to answer that question for themselves. We won’t pressure or persuade and  we will support whatever decision you make, as it is also our job to support and care for you as parents as you make difficult decisions. I have several parents who have weighed this same question over the years and who would love to be a resource for anyone struggling with this decision. I am aware of the commitment I am making by signing up for MIPC's Mexico Mission Trip. This trip requires a great deal of teamwork during preparation, traveling, working, and living together for a week. I understand that the mission of this trip is to build houses for the families of Mexico and build relationships. I agree that my role on this project is to be one of facilitating and serving students as they encounter stretching experiences with new situations, cultures, and faith. I am open to learning through these experiences as well. I am committing to my full attendance and participation in all of the pre-trip meetings leading up to the mission trip, the student ministries auction, and the trip on April 6-13, 2019.
