GROWING SPIRITUALLY: How Do You Learn to Pray?
I am sometimes asked by people, “How do you learn to pray?” I often am at a loss for words.

I am sometimes asked by people, “How do you learn to pray?” I often am at a loss for words. Perhaps it is because my mother started me praying at an early age. At bedtime, we first would go over the Westminster Catechism and then the prayers would start. I prayed for everyone I knew starting with my family. It is a practice that continues to this day.
Recently I saw a poem by one of my favorite poets that gave me some words I hope I can remember when asked the question “How do you learn to pray?” the next time.
Praying
It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.
