| CARLOS FRASER: 5th grader at Island Park| Meet one of the newest ISSF scholarship sponsors
After the 5 PM worship service on March 9, Carlos and his mother Becki Snellenberg came to the table in the narthex where missions elder Jean Carter and I were sitting. Carlos said that he wanted to sponsor a child in our scholarship. After questioning by his mother, Carlos was sure he had enough money to sponsor a child in MIPC’s International Student Scholarship Fund. It was one of the most touching responses to the Children’s Sabbath Service which touched on poor children in the world who could not afford to go to school.
A week and a half later, Eliana Maxim, Director of Children’s Ministries, met with Carlos to ask him why he wanted to sponsor a child. Carlos said, “I did it because I thought it would be nice to sponsor a kid who’s in a poor place and help them have materials and things they might need to live,” he said.
After a bit more time to reflect, Carlos added, “I was impressed that some kids in the world can’t go to school – I couldn’t believe that – and then they have to find their own food and shelter. I’m lucky that I have a nice warm house and a nice family and friends. I can’t share those things with other kids, but I can share my allowance with them.”
Isaiah 11:6 has the famous line…”and a little child shall lead them.” We are witnesses to the truth of that line in Carlos. It is interesting to note that earlier in chapter 11, we also read, "but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth…” Without using these words, Carlos had made a decision with equity for the meek of the earth.
