Faith Events

Faith events are learning experiences that we believe children at specific ages should understand and/or accomplish. These milestones are intended to help the child along in his or her faith development and understanding of how to live as a Christian believer. Each faith event will involve the parents/guardians/significant adults in some way along with the children: through a class, project, worship experience or all three.

The goal is to allow children and their families to see that faith development is a journey that includes, but is not limited to, a specific body of facts. The role of the parents/guardians is critical to the faith growth of children. Faith events are also designed to help adults keep the promises made at their child’s baptism.

Kindergarten: The Lord’s Prayer

Each week the congregation is led in saying the Lord’s Prayer. In a special evening class, we talk about how is it one way to pray all together, but it is not the only way to pray. It is important for the children and adults to understand what they are saying, in addition to being able to repeat the words. The class will lead the Lord’s Prayer in worship and after the service, will be presented with a special certificate commemorating the day. (November – Christ The King Sunday)

Grade 1: Communion Instruction

In a special after school class, we learn about Passover and how Jesus changed that celebration. We talk about food and how important it is to all celebrations we know, including birthdays. The children will be presented with a special lapel pin to wear on World Communion Sunday and their names will be listed in the bulletin. (October – World Communion Sunday)

Grade 2: Worship Workshop

A designated evening class that explores the Sunday morning bulletin to gain a better understanding of both the liturgy and their role as worshippers. Recognizing that children will be staying in for the entire worship service the following year, families will be presented with a copy of A Children’s Guide to Worship and recognized in service. (May – Pentecost)

Grade 3: Bible Presentations

During the class “The Bible and Me”, we learn how the Bible got its name and its parts, also practice using the Bible. Another important part of the class is talking about why we need to know what is in this “library”. Children will be asked to select their favorite verse to highlight and memorize. Children will be presented with their own Bible during worship. (October - Reformation Sunday)

Grade 4: The Stable Visit

Children and their guests will remember Jesus Christ’s birth narrative through a multi-sensory experience of visiting a real stable at night. Children will then record their observations for sharing with the Sunday school’s Christmas celebration. (December)

Grade 5: The Last Supper

Children are invited to attend a re-enactment of the Last Supper. They will participate in crucial moments of the evening, preparing for the days following Maundy Thursday. Although parents are not invited to this event, children are encouraged to share their experience at home and highlight their role that evening. (March)

Letters of invitation are sent out to families aproximately one month before the faith event date.
